Teeth Cleaning (Prophylaxis)
At Pristine Dental NYC, we prioritize our patients’ comfort and quality, no matter the dental service or procedure. Regular teeth cleanings are critical, so we ensure that we make the teeth cleaning process as seamless, simple, and efficient as possible.
Dental Cleaning Process
Plaque and tartar (calculus) will build up anywhere on teeth, around and underneath your gumline. The dentist or dental hygienist will brush off soft plaque and break down hardened tartar with vibrating scalers electronically and manually. Teeth are then polished with a high-powered electric toothbrush and polishing paste, leaving a fresh clean and smooth mouth. The last step of the cleaning process is a fluoride varnish to help protect against cavities.
The dental cleaning visit generally is followed by a routine checkup exam. The need for X-rays for further examination will be determined during the same appointment.

During the dental cleaning and checkup process, the dentist will also check around your teeth and gums for signs of inflamed gums, gingivitis, cavities, chipped teeth and other potential health concerns.
How Long Does a Dental Cleaning Take?
At Pristine Dental, we are as efficient as possible while providing you with maximum patient comfort during your dental cleaning. Each cleaning visit differs slightly based on the amount of plaque, tartar and teeth staining that have to be removed and whether routine dental exams and X-rays are needed, but each teeth cleaning usually lasts between 30 minutes and one hour.
How Often Should I Get My Teeth Cleaned?
It is important to schedule regular teeth cleanings every six months for all patients. However, for patients at risk with oral health concerns or conditions, it may be recommended to receive dental cleanings as often as three months. Some risk factors include:
-
Lack of good dental hygiene
-
A fast build-up of plaque and tartar
-
Smoking
-
Family history of gum disease
-
Diagnosis of periodontal disease
-
Unhealthy and frequent eating habits
-
Immunocompromised patients
By ensuring you are taking proactive and preventative measures, you can avoid or halt oral health conditions, such as gingivitis (gum disease), periodontal disease (bone loss), tooth loss and abscesses.
