Common Causes for Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies are common and come in many forms, including a fractured tooth or an infection in the mouth. Emergency dental services help patients by relieving severe pain and restoring oral health by treating the source of pain through painless procedures. If you are unsure whether you are experiencing a dental emergency, seek immediate professional dental care from Pristine Dental and prevent further damage.

There are many common causes of dental emergencies, including:

dental emergency
  • Severe and sharp toothaches

  • Tooth fracture and tooth chip

  • Tooth trauma, including dislodged teeth

  • Missing or loose dental restoration

  • Gum swelling, facial swelling, abscess

  • Wisdom Tooth Pain

  • Soft tissue injury, lip laceration

  • Hot tooth

  • Limited Jaw Opening

  • TMJ pain

Chipped Tooth: If your tooth is chipped, broken, or fractured, it’s imperative to see your dentist as soon as possible to determine the severity and cause of tooth fracture. A chipped tooth left untreated can result in further damage, becoming infected, or eventually leading to tooth loss. Whether the damage to your tooth is minor or severe, your dentist needs to assess the damage to help relieve discomforting symptoms and prevent further cavities and infections.

Chipped Filling: Fillings can be chipped, dislodged, or damaged due to grinding, chewing, or clenching your teeth. Whether you are experiencing pain or not, you must seek professional assistance to determine the severity of your chipped filling. If the damaged filling is left untreated, it can result in a need for a root canal or lead to possible tooth loss.

Loose Crowns: Crowns can become loose for several reasons, including tooth decay, clenching, grinding, old or broken, traumatic injuries, impacts and more. If you suspect your crown is loose, avoid touching or wiggling the crown, as this can damage your tooth further and seek immediate dental assistance to determine the severity of the damage. We recommend bringing in your loose crown on the onlay if it has dislodged.

Sensitive Teeth: Tooth sensitivity can be caused by various factors. If you are experiencing an overwhelming amount of pain for an extended period of time, it could be an indication of a large cavity or infected tooth pulp. Sensitivity can also be felt when the tooth’s enamel or roots have been eroded and worn down, even to the point where the nerves of the teeth are close to becoming exposed. When the tooth is exposed in such a way, you can feel a sudden, sharp flash of pain when eating or drinking something with low or high temperatures. Grinding or clenching habits could cause microfractures in teeth that could also lead to such symptoms. It is necessary to seek the professional help of a dentist to determine the severity of your tooth sensitivity.

Swollen/Bleeding Gums: Bleeding or swollen gums are a sign of inflammation and can be a key indicator of gum disease. If you notice a particular area that presents gum swelling or bleeding, it can be related to oral hygiene or gingivitis. While if you notice a “pimple” or small bump on the gum, it can even be a sign of an abscess. Reaching out to a dental professional to determine the severity and cause of your swollen gums can help avoid potential dental concerns.

Abscess Swelling & Drainage: It is important to determine the cause of the swelling to avoid further damage or health complications. A tooth abscess is a collection of infected fluid caused by an infected tooth, causing severe pain, aching, and swelling. It can lead to cheek swelling if it has been an ongoing chronic abscess or infection. Even if the abscess drains or diffuses and you experience pain relief, it is imperative that you seek professional dental care to prevent it from recurring. If you leave an abscess untreated, you could be at risk for life-threatening complications or a spread to other parts of the body.

TMJ Disorder: The TMJ or temporomandibular joint refers to the bone, muscles and connective tissues that surround the temporomandibular joints where the lower jaw is connected to the skull and controls chewing, opening and closure of the mouth. TMJ Disorder or Dysfunction (TMD) can give various symptoms like jaw locking, clicking, muscle pain and tenderness, difficulty in chewing and more. The teeth have a comfortable bite position and the TMJ also has a comfortable position in the skull as well. When the comfortable bite and correct joint positions do not align, that is when TMD symptoms can be noticed. Common treatments include TMJ deprogrammers, nightguards, simple injections like botox, oral medications and physical therapy.
